In brief: Petting zoo planned March 31 at coffee shop

On Sacred Grounds will hold a petting zoo and 4-H Club demonstrations for children in Valleyford March 31.

The “Eggstravaganza” takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the coffee and tea shop at 12212 E. Palouse Highway, about 1 1/2 miles west of Highway 27.

The free Easter petting zoo will feature lambs, chickens and bunnies, and children also can learn more about the 4-H experience. Bring a camera and warm clothes.

Open house chance to meet Chief Van Leuven

Spokane Valley residents will have the chance to meet the city’s new Police Chief Rick Van Leuven before this week’s council meeting.

People can talk with the chief during an open house with light refreshments from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The open house and the council meeting that follows will take place at City Hall, 11707 E. Sprague Ave.

A longtime Sheriff’s Office veteran, Van Leuven took the helm at the Spokane Valley precinct Friday.

April Fools breakfast planned

Edgecliff SCOPE will hold an April Fools’ Day breakfast featuring all you can eat pancakes or French toast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at VFW Post 1435, 212 S. David Road.

Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for children under 12, if purchased in advance at the SCOPE office at Thierman Road and Fifth Avenue. Tickets for adults will be $5 the day of the event.

Exchange your jokes and April Fools’ pranks of years past at the community event, which benefits the neighborhood policing group.

Liberty Lake Library

Open house planned Wednesday

The Liberty Lake Municipal Library will host an open house on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the library, 1421 N. Meadowwood Lane.

The community is invited to the kick-off of the library’s “Got Homework? We Can Help” campaign. During the open house library staff will introduce tutor.com to students and parents. This new online database service gives students the opportunity to work with a live tutor to receive help in English, math, social studies and science.

Library staff will also discuss current services directed toward young adults, as well as take suggestions regarding new programs the community would like to see implemented. Refreshments will be served.
