NHL : Modano breaks record in Stars’ loss

Kimmo Timonen scored two goals and established a career high for points in a season to lead the Nashville Predators to a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night, spoiling Mike Modano’s record-breaking night in Nashville, Tenn.

Modano scored two goals to pass Joe Mullen and become the highest scoring American-born player with 503 career goals.

Nashville snapped a five-game losing streak to the Stars, who ended a four-game winning streak.

Modano’s record-tying goal came in the second period and his record-breaking goal came on a power play in the third period – both against Nashville goalie Tomas Vokoun.

Modano’s record-breaking goal came in his 1,227th career game. Mullen posted his 502 goals in 1,062 games. Modano, who has played his entire career with the Minnesota/Dallas franchise, has scored at least one goal in four-consecutive games.

Hurricanes 7, Devils 2: At East Rutherford, N.J., Chad LaRose scored two goals for the first time and Carolina sent Martin Brodeur to the bench with four goals on their first 12 shots in a victory over New Jersey.

Rangers 7, Bruins 0: At New York, Ryan Callahan scored his first two NHL goals, and Matt Cullen added two goals and an assist during New York’s six-goal second period that carried the Rangers to a victory over Boston.

Sean Avery had a career-high four points for the Rangers.

Senators 3, Flyers 2: At Ottawa, Peter Schaefer scored the winning goal and Martin Gerber stopped 28 shots in Ottawa’s victory over Philadelphia.

Tom Preissing and Mike Comrie also scored for the Senators.

The Senators swept the season series with the Flyers 4-0.

Canadiens 3, Maple Leafs 2 (SO): At Montreal, Saku Koivu and Andrei Kostitsyn scored in the shootout after both scored in regulation, leading Montreal to a win over Toronto.

Panthers 8, Islanders 5: At Sunrise, Fla., Olli Jokinen scored two third-period goals to help Florida beat New York.

Blues 3, Oilers 2: At Edmonton, Alberta, Eric Brewer scored 2:04 into overtime and St. Louis extended Edmonton’s losing streak to 10 games with a victory over the Oilers.

Wild 4, Flames 2: At Calgary, Alberta, Brian Rolston scored the tiebreaking goal at 4:47 of the third period to lead Minnesota over Calgary.

Canucks 4, Red Wings 1: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Brendan Morrison had a short-handed goal late in the second period, Roberto Luongo made 14 of his 32 saves in the third, and Vancouver beat Detroit.

Avalanche 6, Coyotes 3: At Glendale, Ariz., Joe Sakic and rookie Paul Stastny scored two goals apiece and Colorado defeated Phoenix.

Sakic’s goals were his 29th and 30th, the ninth time in his career that he has reached 30 goals in a season. Stastny extended his NHL rookie record by scoring in his 20th consecutive game.

Kings 5, Blue Jackets 3: At Los Angeles, defensemen Jamie Heward, Lubomir Visnovsky and Mike Weaver scored for Los Angeles on the team’s first seven shots against Brian Boucher, and defenseman Rob Blake connected on a power play in a victory over Columbus.
