DeLong perfect for CdA

The Spokesman-Review

Jenna DeLong pitched a perfect game, recording 12 of the 15 outs on strikouts, in leading Coeur d’Alene to a 10-0 Inland Empire League softball win over visiting Sandpoint on Monday.

The game had been scheduled for Sandpoint but was moved to CdA because of poor field conditions in Sandpoint. When the teams meet again April 13, the game will be in Sandpoint.

Lindsey Stark went 2 for 3 and Lauren Horton drove in two runs to lead the 10-hit offense for the Vikings (6-0).

High school baseball

Lewiston pounded 25 hits in sweeping an Inland Empire League-opening doubleheader from visiting Lakeland, 8-1 and 6-2.

Matt Blakenship and Adam Carson drove in two runs each in the first game for the Bengals and Blakenship had a two-run single in the second inning of the second game as Lewiston ran its overall record to 4-1. Beau Balmer had five hits on the day.

College softball

Jessie LaPlante yielded 10 hits and a walk over nine innings, but Whitworth’s junior pitcher got out of trouble almost as often as she got into it to give the Pirates a chance to pull out a 6-4, nine-inning win at La Verne, Calif.

It enabled the Pirates (12-3) to earn a split of a doubleheader. La Verne (13-13) won the second game 4-1.

Heather Case, the second-game losing pitcher, drove in a first-game run and scored a run in each game. Halley Cey also drove in a first-game run.

College baseball

Whitworth couldn’t take advantage of Chad Flett’s strong seven-plus innings of pitching and dropped a 2-1 Northwest Conference decision at Willamette.

Flett scattered eight hits and one walk, striking out four, in 71/3 innings, yielding both Willamette (10-11, 4-7 NWC) runs on infield hits in the fourth inning.

Van Lierman doubled in Scott Ward with Whitworth’s (7-14, 5-7) run in the eighth inning.

•Gonzaga’s Jeremy Stumetz and Darin Holcomb are the West Coast Conference players of the week.

Stumetz earned pitching honors for a four-hit, 12-0 win over Washington in his first career start. Holcomb was named player of the week after going 9 for 21 (.429) with four home runs, nine runs scored and 10 RBIs during the week.
