Notorious LL player in minors

Pitcher Danny Almonte, 20, who gained notoriety for playing in the 2001 Little League World Series at the age of 14, has signed a deal with the Southern Illinois Miners.

Almonte, a native of the Dominican Republic, made headlines in 2001 when he threw the first no-hitter in Little League World Series history, striking out 46 while allowing three hits in three starts to lead the Rolando Paulino All Stars to a third place finish.

Almonte’s performance was erased from the record books after it was discovered that he was 14 at the time, two years older than the limit.

Ex-WSU star to coach at LCSC

Former Washington State University two-sport star Jennifer (Stinson) Greeny, who posted a 84-12 record in the past three years as volleyball coach at Pullman High School in Washington, has been named volleyball coach at Lewis-Clark State College, Warriors athletic director Gary Picone announced Tuesday.

Greeny, 30, replaces Jerry Pruitt, who resigned earlier this month because of health reasons.

Greeny was a standout volleyball player at WSU from 1995-99 and also played on the basketball team her senior season. She took a job as an assistant volleyball coach at WSU in 2000. Greeny spent 4 1/2 years at WSU before going to coach at Pullman High.

Greeny graduated from Davenport High in 1995. She led the Gorillas to two state basketball titles before finishing her career as the state’s all-time leading scorer (both boys and girls ) with 2,881 points.

Bjorklund chosen state’s top player

University High School senior Angie Bjorklund added to her many honors when she was named the Gatorade Washington Girls Basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.

She averaged 24.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game for University, which reached the State 4A title game before losing to Greater Spokane League rival Lewis and Clark. She is the league’s all-time leading scorer, male or female, with 2,103 points.
