Hints from Heloise

The Spokesman-Review

Dear Heloise: I always wondered how to really pack brown sugar in a measuring cup. I’ve discovered: Spoon the sugar into a 1-cup measuring cup, place the next-size cup on top and press down. Continue adding sugar and pressing until the cup is filled to the brim and packed firmly.

Now, why didn’t I think of this sooner? – Betty J. Davis, Coulee Dam, Wash.

Dear Heloise: When I cook a meatloaf, I always put two slices of bread on the bottom of the pan first. Now, the meatloaf doesn’t cook in the drippings and get soggy. Makes for a faster cleanup, too. – Sharron Witt, Abilene, Texas

Dear Heloise: When traveling, take along a good supply of single dollar bills. They come in handy for tips, and for using washing or vending machines. – Isobel L., Rahway, N.J.
