Board of directors honors CVSD employees

Each year the Central Valley Board of Directors recognizes district employees who have made outstanding contributions to the district by awarding them with the Meritorious Service Award.

Plaques were presented to this year’s recipients at Monday’s board meeting.

“Glenna Bouge, assistant principal at Central Valley High School, was chosen for the certified employee category. One of her nominators wrote, “Glenna is a very strong and positive advocate for students. She works well in the school system to try to maximize each student’s potential. A big void will be left when Glenna retires in the spring.”

“Jesus Moreno, custodian at Central Valley High School, was selected for the classified employee award. “Jesus has always performed his job in an outstanding fashion,” wrote his nominator. “What really sets him above the rest is his school spirit and support of others. Due to his Stinky Sneaker performances and other school spirit activities, Jesus has made a close connection with the students which has gone a long way in getting the students to take better care of the building.”

“The Community Member/Organization award went to the Shawn Higgins Foundation for its support at Greenacres Elementary School. “For the past five years, the Shawn Higgins Foundation has provided monetary support for our students and families. They have insured that a reading tutor is consistently working with our students that have the greatest need, including English Language Learners,” wrote their nominator.

“This year two groups were selected for the Team Award. The awards are given for their commitment to student learning through collaboration.

The Homeless Education and Resource Team: HEART drivers have picked up and safely delivered students to the CV neighborhood schools from shelters and safe houses located all over Spokane County. Since the program began five years ago the HEART Transportation Team has arranged transportation for more than 475 K-12 homeless students. Their nominator wrote, “Our transportation supervisors and drivers understand that consistent school attendance contributes to academic achievement and often provides emotional stability to students whose lives are fragmented as a result of extraordinary life circumstances.”

HEART members include: Marie Scott, Susan Silva, Sharon Nichol, Leslie Camden-Goold, Larry Becker, Jilanne Westley, Barb Weir, Paul Benner, Doreen Barrett, Diane Hippe, Mike Rathbone, Lori Moorhead, Hurley Haga, Annita Hackett, Julie Polignoni, Marvin Anderson, Gary Johnson-Beemster, Michael Carey, Teri Perry, Joe Wallin and Lori Schenk.

The staff at the Central Valley Kindergarten Center, which opened last fall, also received the team award. Administrator Joanne Comer wrote, “I am proud of the entire staff at the Kindergarten Center. Each staff or team member works hard to provide the best possible environment for student learning.”
