CV alumni tourney starts Friday

How many people remember Stan Chalich? OK that’s a trick question.

How many remember when the Central Valley High School government instructor was a standout Bears basketball player in the early 1960s?

Chalich, who played on three state-placing CV teams, will be on the court Friday and Saturday during the first CV alumni tournament.

The tournament was conceived by current CV coach Rick Sloan, who played for Chalich when he was the Bears head coach.

Players past and more recent will be involved in a series of games both days, including a four-team recreation division among teams of graduates from 1975 and earlier through 1985.

An eight-team competitive division will include players on teams from 1986 through 2004. Game times are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday and will start up again at 11 a.m. Saturday with the final games played at 3 p.m.

Some names to jog memories are Derek Taylor, Ryan Heacock, Peter Leyk, Nick Matthews, CJ Nagel and Justin Bright from the 2004 fourth-place state team and Bryan Depew who went on to a record-setting career at Whitworth.

How about Casey Mason, Kevin Stocker and Mark Arland from the ‘88 fourth-place state finishers? Remember varsity teammates Ryan Looney, Kyle Latta, Jeremy Mort and Paul Allen who played three years from 1991-93?

From the 1970s former major league baseball player Bump Wills, John Rhodes, Gary Rasmussen, Nick Brasch and current University girls basketball assistant Mark Kuipers will be on hand.

The tournament will be a time for CV basketball fans to watch and relive old memories.
