Blazers’ Roy top rookie

Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy was chosen as the NBA’s Rookie of the Year on Wednesday after leading all rookies with an average of 16.8 points, 4.0 assists and 35.4 minutes in 57 games.

Roy received 127 out of a possible 128 first-place votes (638 points) for the award, known as the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy, from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters.

Toronto’s Andrea Bargnani finished second with 264 points and Memphis’ Rudy Gay was third with 93 points. Charlotte’s Adam Morrison was fourth with 44 points.

Roy was the Pacific-10 Conference’s Player of the Year his senior season at Washington.

He was drafted with the sixth overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves, then traded to Portland for the draft rights to Randy Foye.

The 6-foot-6, 229-pound guard scored at least 20 points 16 times. His career high was 29, against Utah on April 4.

Hockey

Tigers’ Russell WHL top player

Medicine Hat Tigers defenseman Kris Russell is the Western Hockey League’s player of the year.

The 20-year-old from Caroline, Alberta, was the only defenseman in the league to lead his team in scoring. He had 32 goals and 37 assists in 59 games.

Russell has also been named the WHL’s top defenseman for the second year in a row.

Russell was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets and signed a contract with the NHL club last year.

The 5-10, 167-pound blue-liner helped Canada win gold at the last two world junior hockey championships and became the country’s top-scoring defenseman all-time in the tournament with five goals and three assists.

Carey Price of the Tri-City Americans was chosen best goaltender and Everett Silvertips forward Kyle Beach was named top rookie.

Silvertips forward Zach Hamill won the league scoring trophy with 32 goals and 61 assists in 69 games.

Cory Clouston of the Kootenay Ice was selected as coach of the year.

Football

Bekkering, Greer get shot at pros

Former Eastern Washington basketball player Henry Bekkering was drafted by Calgary in the Canadian Football League draft.

The Stampeders picked Bekkering as a kicker in the fifth round, the 34th selection overall.

Bekkering, who graduated from high school in Taber, Alberta, in 2003, played football for the Eagles that fall, handling kickoffs. He redshirted in basketball and then played two years before transferring to the University of Calgary a year ago.

Former Idaho player Keith Greer signed as a free agent with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints as a fullback.

He played tight end and H-back at Idaho.
