The Spokesman-Review

Spokane City Council members Mary Verner and Brad Stark have scheduled a neighborhood summit meeting tonight at Council Chambers at City Hall to talk about increasing growth, safety and congestion problems along U.S. Highway 195 south of Spokane.

The meeting will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Residents, business people and property owners from the Qualchan and Eagle Ridge areas are encouraged to attend, according to city officials.

The summit will address transportations issues with Jerry Lenzi, regional administrator for the state highway department, expected to be on hand.

Also, fire and emergency response, soil erosion, water drainage and neighborhood development will also be open for discussion, the council members said in a press release.

Stark and Verner represent City Council District 2, which includes southwest neighborhoods.

Girl Scouts send treats to troops

Local Girl Scouts recently collected donations of their cookies to be included in care packages for newly deployed soldiers.

The Troop to Troop Project raised 797 cases of Girl Scout cookies between Feb. 4 and April 15.

That number is more than triple of those cookies raised in last year’s project.

The Girl Scouts Inland Empire Council said that 2,276 local scouts collected the cookies, and included handwritten thank-you letters to the soldiers.

The cookies were delivered on April 23 to Fairchild Air Force Base, where they will be distributed to the troops.
