NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Crown Royal 400

Site: Richmond, Va. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 3 p.m.); Saturday, race (FOX, 4 p.m.). Track: Richmond International Raceway (tri-oval, .75 miles, 14 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 300 miles, 400 laps. Last race: As beer cans bounced around his car, Jeff Gordon crossed the finish line under caution for win No. 77 — breaking a sixth-place tie with the late Dale Earnhardt on NASCAR’s career victory list. It was only fitting that it happened at Talladega Superspeedway, where Earnhardt — who would have been 56 last Sunday — won 10 times in his Cup career. Last year: Dale Earnhardt Jr. took advantage of a mistake by Kevin Harvick and then held off Denny Hamlin for several more restarts to win the Crown Royal 400, snapping a 27-race winless streak. Earnhardt’s previous win was the previous July in Chicago — his only victory of 2005. Fast facts: Hendrick drivers have won six of the first nine races, including the last two by Gordon. … Gordon struggled at Richmond last year, finishing 40th and 31st in the two events. .. Earnhardt Jr. hasn’t won since last year’s Crown Royal 400. … Kurt Busch picked up his first top-five finish in nine races this season and second top 10 after placing third at Talladega. … Talladega Superspeedway permanently has banned the 14 fans from buying tickets at the speedway following their arrests Sunday for throwing objects on the track. … Juan Pablo Montoya was fined $10,000 for making an obscene gesture on live TV at Phoenix two weeks ago. … .Richard Petty had seven straight wins at Richmond from 1970-1973. Next race: Dodge Avenger 500, May 12, Darlington, S.C.

NASCAR BUSCH

Circuit City 250

Site: Richmond, Va. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 1 p.m.), race (ESPN2, 4:30 p.m.). Track: Richmond International Raceway (tri-oval, .75 miles, 14 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 250 miles, 187.5 laps. Last race: Bobby Labonte pushed teammate Tony Stewart to the lead, then won with a dramatic pass in the last 200 yards at Talladega Superspeedway. Labonte came away with his 10th Busch win and first since 1998. Last year: Kevin Harvick passed Paul Menard with 48 laps to go and held off a late challenge from teammate Jeff Burton to win the rain-delayed Circuit City 250. Fast facts: Harvick has won the last three Busch events at Richmond dating to the fall of 2005. Harry Gant also won three straight at the track from 1991-92. … Brad Coleman picked up his first career pole last week and finished a personal-best ninth in the race. … Chevrolet has won the last two races to moved a point ahead of Ford in the manufacturer standings. Chevrolets have taken the last three Richmond events. … There were a series-record 36 lead changes last week. Next race: Diamond Hill Plywood 200, May 11, Darlington, S.C.

NHRA

O’Reilly Midwest Nationals

Site: Madison, Ill. Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 2 p.m.; Saturday, qualifying, 9:30 a.m. (ESPN2, 2 p.m., tape); Sunday, eliminations, noon (ESPN2, 4 p.m., tape). Track: Gateway International Raceway. Last event: Ashley Force won the first father-daughter race in NHRA history, edging 14-time series champion John Force in the first round of Funny Car eliminations in the Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. Robert Hight claimed the Funny Car category, and Brandon Bernstein won his second straight Top Fuel event to move into first place in the series standings. Greg Anderson raced to his fourth Pro Stock win of the season to take a 212-point lead in the standings and Karen Stoffer’s second win of the year helped her regain the Pro Stock Motorcycle points lead. Last year: Tony Schumacher earned his first victory of the season in the O’Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals. Tony Pedregon, Mike Edwards and Chip Ellis won their categories. Fast facts: Hight has advanced to the final in four of his five starts this season and now trails Funny Car leader Ron Capps by just 45 points. … Warren Johnson appeared in his first Pro Stock final in 27 events last weekend. … Bernstein ended a 26-race winless streak at the 2005 event. Next event: Thunder Valley Nationals, May 20, Bristol, Tenn.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Last race: Erik Darnell picked up his first career truck series victory at Kansas Speedway, dominating the race and snapping Mike Skinner’s string of wins at three. A victory in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 would have given Skinner — who also won three straight races in 1996 — the series record. Instead, the points leader finished fifth. Next race: Quaker Steak and Lube 200, May 18, Concord, N.C.

CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES

Last race: Sebastien Bourdais raced to his second Grand Prix of Houston victory on April 22 and grabbed the inside track for his fourth consecutive Champ Car title. The Frenchman earned his 25th career win in his 62nd start, continuing his unprecedented dominance of the circuit. Rookie Graham Rahal, Bourdais’ teammate, finished second. The 18-year-old Rahal, who skipped his senior prom in Ohio to race in Houston, became the youngest driver in series history to earn a podium finish. Next race: G.I. Joe’s Grand Prix, June 10, Portland, Ore.

FORMULA ONE

Last race: Felipe Massa of Ferrari won the Bahrain Grand Prix on April 15. Lewis Hamilton of McLaren finished second, becoming the first driver to start his F1 career with three straight top-three finishes. Next race: Spanish Grand Prix, May 13, Barcelona.

INDY RACING LEAGUE

Last race: Dan Wheldon, a close runner-up in his two previous races at Kansas Speedway, was 10 seconds ahead of Dario Franchitti late in the Kansas Lottery Indy 300 and won under caution when Ed Carpenter crashed with two laps to go. It was Wheldon’s second victory in four races this year, along with the season opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Next race: Indianapolis 500, May 27.
