Notebook: Swisher signs deal with A’s

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Nick Swisher and the Oakland Athletics agreed Friday on a $26.75 million, five-year contract that also includes a one-year club option for 2012.

“It’s hard to imagine what just happened,” Swisher said. “I’m glad we got it done. This is something I’ve wanted. I think I’ve found a home in Oakland for a long time.”

Swisher was hitting .286 with six home runs and 17 RBIs going into the game against Cleveland on Friday.

The 26-year-old Swisher hit .254 with 35 home runs and 95 RBIs last season in helping the A’s reach the A.L. championship series. He became the first player in Oakland history to start at least 70 games in two different positions in the same year.

Callaspo suspended

Arizona placed infielder Alberto Callaspo on the restricted list without pay, a day after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife.

“The Arizona Diamondbacks take domestic violence issues very seriously and do not condone the actions for such alleged behavior,” team president Derrick Hall said.

Tulowitzki gets ball

Colorado’s rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki retrieved the baseball that’s believed to have been used in his unassisted triple play against Atlanta on April 29.

Radio host Steffan Tubbs, who was sitting behind the Rockies’ dugout, said he caught the ball when first baseman Todd Helton absentmindedly tossed it into the stands seconds after Tulowitzki turned the 13th unassisted triple play in major league history.
