THE SLICE

Some people try to adhere to a strict church/state separation when it comes to personal life and the workplace.

It’s just a matter of choice.

But many of those who attempt to maintain a wall between the two realms eventually find themselves bringing family members to the office. That’s when something interesting can happen.

When vaguely annoying co-workers treat your relatives in a friendly or sincerely solicitous manner, it can open your eyes to your colleagues’ true characters.

“Perhaps I misjudged this person,” you think. “Maybe he/she is a decent human being.”

Of course, any co-worker who is rude or dismissive during your family’s visit is probably dead to you forever — including those you had previously liked.

Blood, after all, is thicker than copier toner.
