North Idaho was the home of champions and near-champions Saturday.
North Idaho College came up just shy of the NJCAA Division I national softball championship by losing to Chipola (Fla.) 6-3 in eight innings in the title game at Plant City, Fla. After losing Thursday’s opener, the Cardinals (48-26) won six consecutive games at the three-day tourney, including three earlier in the day, to make the big game.
Coeur d’Alene’s softball team swept to the State 5A title at Post Falls, finishing with an 11-3 rout of Borah. The Vikings (28-2) were 4-0 at the tourney, outscoring rivals 21-4.
Lake City’s baseball team finished its season with a 13-game winning streak, defeating Lewiston 7-1 in the State 5A final at Boise. The Timberwolves (22-6) defeated defending state champion Lewiston (25-6) five times this season.
Timberlake handily defended its State 3A boys track title at Boise State University.
Timberlake’s softball team reached the title game at the State 3A tournament at Pocatello before falling to Kimberly, 3-1.
