Two North Idaho tennis players finish third

Lake City’s Byron Grey beat Mountain View’s Eric Schuler 6-3, 6-3 and claimed third place at the State 5A tennis tournament Saturday in Boise.

Grey advanced past Coeur d’Alene’s Matt Marceau (who retired) after beating Borah’s Alex Whitlock 6-2, 6-3 earlier.

In girls singles, Lewiston’s Rye Hewett beat Eagle’s Amanda Pham 6-0, 6-3 to earn third place. Hewett beat teammate Kim Fong 6-0, 6-4 and Capital’s Lauren Mulhern 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 earlier in the day.

At the State 4A tournament in Boise, Moscow’s Stephen Kwaitkoski took second place after falling 6-2, 6-4 to Bishop Kelly’s Matt Schaff in the championship match. Kwaitkoski took care of Hillcrest’s James Weber 6-4, 6-0 earlier.

In 4A girls singles, Sandpoint’s Abby Helander beat Century’s Liz Anderson 6-3, 7-5 to claim third place.

At the State 3A tourney, 2006 state champ Rayna Allen of Clark Fork fell 6-2, 6-2 to Parma’s Kali Roche in this year’s state championship match.

In 3A boys doubles, Clark Fork’s Mike Martin and Thomas McMahon lost 7-6, 6-2 to Community School’s Peter Atkinson and Tanner Flanigan in the consolation championship.

Martin and McMahon beat Sugar-Salem’s Brian King and Steve Holman earlier in the day.
