EVERETT – June Daugherty, Washington State’s new women’s basketball coach, is listed in critical condition at a hospital in Everett after suffering what is reported to have been a heart attack.

According to reports from KIRO-TV in Seattle, Daugherty collapsed at the Everett Clinic on Tuesday afternoon and was given CPR before being admitted to the Providence Everett Medical Center.

Hospital spokeswoman Cheri Russum confirmed Daugherty’s condition to The Spokesman-Review late Tuesday night. Russum could not supply any other information.

The 50-year-old Daugherty was hired at Washington State just 33 days ago in a surprising turnabout after being fired at rival Washington in March after 11 seasons.

During her time at UW, she took the Huskies to six NCAA tournaments and compiled a 191-139 record. But when the Huskies were eliminated in the first round of the NCAAs this season, athletic director Todd Turner decided not to renew her contract, citing declining interest in her program by fans and in-state recruits.

Before coming to Washington, Daugherty coached at Boise State from 1989-96 and had a 123-74 overall record.

At Washington State, she took over a program that had not had a winning season since 1996 and has only one NCAA appearance in its history. She replaced Sherri Murrell, who resigned after winning just 27 games in five years.

Daugherty and the school agreed to a seven-year contract, and she recently just completed hiring her coaching staff – which includes her husband Mike. The Daughertys are the parents of 13-year-old twins.
