State boys golf : Frame leads GSL’s first-day efforts
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Six of the nine boys representing the Greater Spokane League made the first-round cut Wednesday in the State 4A tournament at the Shuksan Golf Club.
Of the 80 golfers who earned a spot in the state tournament, 42 made the first-day cut.
University sophomore Hank Frame led the GSL, shooting a 3-under-par 69 for third place overall going into the final round of the two-day state tournament.
Frame, who finished 19th last year, said his added experience has helped him stay focused.
“I was hoping I’d do better this year. I had a little bit more confidence coming in this year,” Frame said. “I struggled with my putting and then I slowly got the greens figured out.”
Central Valley sophomore Tanner Robb, who shot a 70 in his first state tournament appearance, said the course fit his style of play because it wasn’t as long as other courses he has played.
“I don’t hit it very long, but this is a kind of course where you don’t have to hit it long,” Robb said. “I just got lucky that this course suited me.”
Ferris senior Ryan Jones also shot 70 and is in a four-way tie for fourth. Lewis and Clark freshman Christian Alfaro and Ferris senior Dustin Poe each shot 74. Mead junior Erick Henderson, along with nine others who shot 75, was the last to make the cut.
Poe, who finished first in the District 8 4A tournament, said he played well although he made minor mistakes that hurt him.
“It was kind of a weird round,” Poe said. “I struck the ball very well. It was just basically three errant shots on my back nine that cost me my game. I putted well, I did a lot of things well. It just didn’t work out for me.”
Senior Patrick Boag of Eisenhower High of Yakima leads after one round with a 67.
The final round begins today at 8 a.m.
