They describe this podcast as a weekly summary of the art and business of writing. It’s really just an mp3 version of a twice-weekly public radio interview show produced in Irvine, Calif.

That means it’s sunnier, tends to dwell on the how-to genre, and is breezier than a show someone on the East Coast would produce.

“Writers on Writing” covers the usual topics one associates with mainstream popular literature. Host Barbara DeMarco-Barrett interviews published authors, gets them to discuss the Southern California literary scene and the struggles of being an unpublished writer.

DeMarco- Barrett is reasonably talented in her own right, being the author of the self-help book “Pen on Fire: A Busy Woman’s Guide to Igniting the Writer Within.”

The topics may sometimes be a bit thin, but you have to give DeMarco-Barrett credit for plugging along, producing two 55-minute podcasts each week. The back catalog for Writers on Writing is well over 100 episodes.

Production quality: variable.

Host temperament: upbeat, caffeinated.

Hipness factor: none.
