Area roundup: Whitman sweeps Pirates

Rosa Brey finished with 18 kills Wednesday to lead Whitman College to a 30-25, 30-19, 36-34 win over Whitworth in Northwest Conference volleyball play at Walla Walla.

The Pirates (10-14, 5-10), who defeated Whitman 3-1 on Oct. 3, have dropped four consecutive matches and seven of eight.

Lydia Hayes and Kaelyn Merkel added 11 kills apiece for the Missionaries (12-11, 8-7).

Cassie Moore had 10 kills and 17 digs for Whitworth, which completes its season Friday at home against Lewis & Clark.

Women’s golf

Amy Eneroth (Mead High) finished tied for 22nd place and helped Washington State tie for eighth place at the Kent Youel Invitational at Kapolei, Hawaii.

Eneroth finished three rounds at Kapolei Golf Course at 13-over-par 229, 12 shots behind UCLA’s Tiffany Joh and Maria Jose Uribe. UCLA won the team title with an 881, 53 shots better than WSU.

Jessica Black (230) tied for 26th for the Cougars, who completed the fall portion of their schedule.

Women’s basketball

Washington State’s 7 p.m. Friday exhibition game against Southern Oregon has been moved to Bohler Gym because of a power issue at Beasley Coliseum.

Football

The Spokane Shock of arenafootball2 announced that offensive lineman Rico Ochoa has re-signed with the team.

Ochoa, 6-foot-2 and 340 pounds, started all 17 games last season. He is the fifth member of the Western Division-champion Shock to re-sign and the 18th member of the 2008 roster.

“The Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League announced the signing of former Eastern Washington University and Shock player Isaiah Trufant.

Trufant (5-8, 170) had 53 tackles and a team-leading 17 pass break-ups for the AFL’s Kansas City Brigade last season.
