It was a cool afternoon Sunday for American Legion Post 149’s annual chili cook-off, which was very fortunate, as flames were observed coming out of two or three entries. Winners were both Debbies.

“Dumptruck Debbie” VanScyoc won first prize in the best and hottest chili categories, while Debbie Brock ran away with second prize.

Your correspondent finished as an “also ran,” somewhere behind the pack. With a prize for the hottest chili, it is feared that next year will end in a disaster, as everyone flocks to the habanero chilies or worse.

Forest Service, community leaders meet

Officials from the Forest Service’s Sandpoint Ranger District met with community leaders in Bayview Oct. 23 to discuss the tentative plan for development of an ATV/dirt bike trail from Bayview, through the hills to Talachee, on Lake Pend Oreille.

The proposed route would cross Cape Horn and pass through the high country on the west side of the lake. Side trails to Maiden Rock and Evans Landing are also in the works. These trails are planned to be 72 inches wide, with clearing limits 10 feet wide and 8 feet high, to preclude any fire danger.

Comments and/or suggestions are solicited, and may be directed to the Ranger District at: 1500 Highway 2, Suite 110, Sandpoint, ID 83864. Or e-mail mhamilton@fs.fed.us.

Health issues faced by residents

Two neighbors are battling health issues. Lani Eldridge, who has an apparently chronic stomach virus, is still in critical condition after her return from the Mayo Clinic in Southern California. She has been re-admitted to the hospital for further tests.

Doris Miracle, a well-known senior citizen from Cape Horn, was involved in a serious auto accident, with fractures involving her neck and both legs. She will be spending much time in ICU, possibly weeks, before being moved to a nursing home for further recovery. She is expected to completely recover, but it will take time.

Development being monitored

A community “watchdog” group is watching with great interest the proposed development of a housing tract planned by Viking Homes Inc.

The issues in contention are the potential floodplain alteration that allegedly could exacerbate the danger of spring floods in Bayview Creek. It’s the same stream that allegedly was diverted underground and directed through culverts back in 1997, then back-filled, destroying the banks and fish spawning beds where the stream passed through Boileau’s Resort. We understand that various public agencies are studying these and other problems connected to spawning beds.

In that same vein, the deadline set by Idaho Department of Lands for mitigation of kokanee spawning beds on the lakeshore at Harbor View Marina will expire on Wednesday. Work started on mitigating the spawning beds on Oct. 25. Silt is being pumped out of the lake bed, where it is being buried on the upland property.

Council meeting includes program

Kacy Williams, instructional coach for both Athol and Spirit Lake elementary schools, presented a program at the monthly meeting of the Bayview Community Council. She heads up the “America Reads Program” for the two schools. Volunteer retirees help out with reading to the children in an effort to emphasize reading as fun. Prospective volunteers can reach her through either of the two schools.
