Kramer making the rounds

There was a familiar face roaming the sidelines at Eastern Washington University’s football practice Wednesday.

Former Eagles coach Mike Kramer stopped by to watch his former team, and spent most of the practice session renewing acquaintances.

Kramer, who was fired last May after seven seasons at Montana State, said he has visited practices at more than 35 campuses since mid- September in an effort to make it known that he is interested in getting back into coaching.

Among his earlier stops were USC, Washington and Washington State. Kramer, who visited with Eastern Washington coach Paul Wulff before and after practice, said he was scheduled to fly to Florida to take in a University of Florida practice later this week but postponed the trip.

He plans to travel to Corvallis, Ore., today to visit an Oregon State practice, before heading to Eugene, Ore., to watch Saturday’s Pacific-10 Conference game between No. 4 Oregon and No. 6 Arizona State.

Kramer said he is hoping to land a job as an assistant college coach, preferably at a Football Bowl Subdivision school, and added he has already put more than 7,000 miles on his car in search of that job.

Chiefs ranked No. 9 in CHL

The Spokane Chiefs are ranked ninth in the Canadian Hockey League Mosaik MasterCard Top 10 Rankings for Week 6 of the 2007-08 season.

The weekly rankings of the Canadian Hockey League’s Top 10 are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.

The Chiefs have won eight in a row, the second-longest streak in franchise history, and are tied with the Tri-City Americans, the sixth-ranked team this week, for first place in the U.S. Division. Each team has 24 points.

Spokane and Tri-City are two of four WHL teams in the rankings. Calgary is ranked third and Medicine Hat is 10th. The Vancouver Giants, the Chiefs’ opponent on Saturday night, fell off the list after being ranked eighth last week.

The Chiefs are facing three games in as many nights this weekend when they welcome the Seattle Thunderbirds and Vancouver on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Spokane will travel to Seattle on Sunday for its third game in nine days with the Thunderbirds.
