Huckleberries: Hudson’s Hamburgers gets hit, miss

You may have heard that Hudson’s Hamburgers received a good write-up from Peter Fish in Sunset mag. But did you know that local food reviewer Patrick Jacobs (aka OrangeTV) is reluctant to belly up to the counter for his own take on the Coeur d’Alene burger dynasty? Patrick’s afraid he might not be impressed enough. And he’ll “get beaten by old-timers or at least end up on the black list of the Huddy’s cult, resulting in dirty looks from strangers at the grocery store.” Commented Patrick at Huckleberries Online: “Their burgers are technically just fine, but certainly over-hyped, and there’s really no logical reason they couldn’t modernize a bit and expand both the menu and the seating area. I still think the magic is in the spicy ketchup and mustard more than the actual burger itself.” If he did review Hudson’s, Patrick said, he’d like to do it from a perspective of someone who’s never heard of the place before. Which might be difficult. Who around here hasn’t heard of Hudson’s Hamburgers? At Sunset mag, writer Fish was impressed by the broad, democratic spectrum of clientele attracted by the burger joint on Sherman Avenue, deeming Hudson’s unwritten philosophy as “one nation, double cheeseburger, pickles and onions for all.”

“ At Huckleberries Online this morning, Coeur d’Alene Librarian Bette Ammon will launch the HBO Book Club discussion on Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestseller, “Eat, Pray, Love” – you know, the chick book that I’m reading when my wife isn’t watching.

“ At 10:30 this morning, I’ll conduct my weekly Huckleberries Gone Wireless interview with Nils Rosdahl, the longtime adviser of North Idaho College’s award-winning Sentinel student newspaper, and a freelance business columnist for The Spokesman-Review.
