Post Falls

Print exhibition opens

An exhibition of palladium prints by a retired area neurosurgeon opens this month at The Arts and Cultural Center at The Old Church in Post Falls.

The artist, Ernest Fokes, is a photographer and master of the palladium printing process, widely used until 1917.

Museumgoers can see the show and visit with the artist at a free opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Old Church.

Fokes, a longtime Coeur d’Alene resident, studied under technique-master Dick Arentz. His prints have been shown in U.S. and French galleries and are held in several private and corporate collections.

On Saturday, he’ll deliver lecture on the history of the art form and his subject matter before leading a gallery tour of his work from 11 a.m. to noon. Reservations are required.

Each print is handmade. An artist selects the appropriate paper, paints its surface with a sensitized solution of palladium, dries the paper, places a negative in contact with it and exposes them to ultraviolet light. Prints are then immersed in developing solution, washed and dried.

For more information and lecture reservations, call Marta Harrington at 457-8950.
