West Valley staves off elimination

The West Valley volleyball team avoided elimination while Colville and Pullman were ousted from the State 2A tournament at the Toyota Center in Kennewick on Thursday.

West Valley lost to Ellensburg 12-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-22 in the first round but rebounded with two wins and will play Archbishop Murphy in the match for fifth and eighth places at 5 p.m. today. The Eagles beat Mt. Baker 25-22, 20-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-10 and Mark Morris 25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 21-25, 15-7 to earn a spot in today’s consolation final.

Pullman’s Greyhounds won their first match 22-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-23, 15-13 but dropped their next two matches and were eliminated. Tumwater beat Pullman 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 and Grandview ended the Greyhounds’ season with a 25-15, 25-22, 26-24 win.

Colville was swept by Grandview in the first round but responded with a 17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-6, 20-18 win over Woodland. The Indians were eliminated after falling 3-0 to Archbishop Murphy.

The 4A and 3A tournaments begin their two-day runs today in Kennewick

State 1B

Four out of the five local teams competing at the tournament at the Yakima SunDome went 2-0 to advance to today’s semifinals and will play for a spot in the championship match.

Tekoa-Oakesdale, which beat Moses Lake Christian and Sunnyside Christian, will play Odessa in a semifinal match. Odessa beat Lake Quinault and edged Entiat in the quarterfinals.

Garfield-Palouse beat Pateros and Lopez Island and will play LaCrosse-Washtucna in the semifinals. The Tigercats beat Northport and Klickitat.

Northport responded with a win over Neah Bay and will play Pateros today in the consolation semifinals.

The 1A and 2B tournaments begin their two-day runs today in Yakima.
