West Valley girls top Cheney in shootout

Kaley Way carried the day for the West Valley Eagles on Saturday in a State 2A girls quarterfinals soccer match in Cheney.

Way scored the game-winning goal in a 6-5 shootout advantage to lift West Valley (16-4) to a 1-0 win over the Cheney Blackhawks (17-3).

The victory sends the Eagles into the semifinals where they will take on Burlington-Edison on Friday at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood, Wash.

After a scoreless game through overtime, Kayla Courchaine, Missy Carey, Savannah Atabell, Deedee Garbe, Kassie McKnight and Way scored shootout goals for the Eagles.

Kellie Zakrzewski, Chelsie Breen, Nicole Fox, Kaitlin Whitfield and Ceri Palk scored shootout goals for the Blackhawks, who were the Great Northern League regular-season champs.

Goalkeeper Karina Carpenter notched eight saves to earn the shutout for the Eagles. Nora Ifft had five saves for Cheney.

•West Valley of Yakima scored three first-half goals and made them stand up in a 3-0 victory over the Mt. Spokane Wildcats (11-5) in a State 3A quarterfinal match in Yakima.

The Rams outshot the Wildcats 16-3.

•Terrika Weaver scored a pair of second-half goals to lead Seattle Christian to a 3-0 victory over the Lakeside Eagles (13-8) in a State 1A/2B/1B quarterfinals match at Gonzaga Prep High School.

Boys soccer

The St. George’s Dragons (14-2-1) and Northwest Christian Crusaders (10-5-1) will meet again – this time in the semifinals of the State 2B/1B tournament at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner, Wash.

Ryan Johnson scored a shootout goal and then made a diving save to give the Dragons a 4-3 shootout advantage and a 3-2 quarterfinal win over Mt. Vernon Christian at Gonzaga Prep HS.

The Dragons trailed 2-0 at the half, but second-half goals by Tyler Evans and Blaine Nicholls knotted the score.

The Crusaders scored twice in the second half – one off the foot of Derek McFaul and the other an own-goal in the 56th minute to post a 2-1 quarterfinals win over Riverside Christian at G-Prep.

The Dragons and Crusaders have played three times this season. The Dragons won all three in shootouts.
