Gonzaga Prep football coach Dave Carson announced his resignation Tuesday after 10 seasons at the helm.

During his tenure, the Bullpups compiled a 70-36 record and finished among the Greater Spokane League’s top four and qualified for state preliminary play seven times, reaching the State 4A semifinals twice.

“It’s time,” Carson said. “I’m 60-ish and just tired. It took a lot of energy to build the program over a 10-year period and a lot of energy to maintain it. It’s time for someone who is a little more enthusiastic and has more energy.”

Carson said he hopes to continue teaching physical education at G-Prep and would like to remain involved with football in a lesser capacity, but that it is up to the administration.

“He will return to teach if he wants,” said activities coordinator Paul Manfred. “We will open the position and start a search after the first of the year.”

Carson coached in California and was an assistant at Rogers before following Don Anderson in fall 1998.

It took two seasons to get the program back into the postseason, but it became an annual event this decade, including semifinal berths in 2004 and again last year for teams that went a combined 23-4.

“I understood when I made the decision to apply it could have long-term ramifications,” said Carson of when he took the G-Prep job.

“I had to do what I had to do. I think I’ve done a good job for 10 years and now someone else can take it. The cupboard’s not bare.”

Manfred said Carson provided the program stability and expanded player involvement in things beyond just the games.

“He made it a more personal touch with kids,” Manfred said. “We’re definitely sorry to see him go. He’s done a great job and we’re thankful for what he’s given us.”

The school’s end-of-season football banquet is Jan. 6 and the replacement process will begin thereafter, said Manfred.
