Cougars stumble late, lose to Broncos

Chandice Cronk scored 18 points and Jen Gottschalk had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead Santa Clara to a 62-52 non-conference women’s basketball win over Washington State on Tuesdaynight in Pullman.

The Broncos (1-1) trailed for much of the second half before they got three 3-pointers in the final 3:59 as part of a 13-3 run to close the game.

Cronk hit 6 of 13 shots and had the first of the late 3-pointers before Elizabeth Doran hit the next two on her way to 13 points.

The loss drops the Cougars to 0-2 under first-year coach June Daugherty.

WSU was paced by 12 points from Colleen Betteridge and 11 points and nine rebounds by Katie Appleton.

WSU held a 33-31 halftime lead and led by three with 10 minutes to play.

Women’s soccer

Washington State senior goalkeeper Brynn Bemis (Lake City High) was named honorable mention to the Top Drawer Soccer team.

Bemis started every match for the Cougars (11-5-3), who posted wins over No. 4 USC and No. 18 Oklahoma State.

Football

The Spokane Shock of arenafootball2 added offensive lineman Seth Cook (6-foot-4, 332 pounds) from Marshall and junior college defensive lineman Roderkus Wright (6-6, 285).
