Hints from Heloise

The Spokesman-Review

Dear Readers: Caring for antique collectibles can be tricky, so I’d like to share some important dos and don’ts.

When it comes to antique collectibles, making them look shiny and new is usually a big NO-NO! But there are some things you can do to keep them in good shape without changing their value:

•DO leave coins in “as is” condition. An old patina adds to their value.

•DO clean mildew on antique wooden furniture using a cloth dipped in a mixture of 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon bleach and 1 tablespoon liquid dishwashing soap. Then dry with a clean cloth.

•DO wash “hearty” ceramics with soap and water, but more delicate, painted or damaged pieces should simply be wiped with a damp cloth.

•DO clean and lubricate antique clocks every five years.

•DON’T polish dark antique bronze. Destroying the old patina will lower the value. – Heloise
