A-Rod, Yankees close to deal

Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees have agreed to the outline of a record $275 million, 10-year contract, a deal that potentially would allow him to earn millions more if he sets the career home runs record.

The amount of the guaranteed money was revealed by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been finalized.

Rodriguez and his wife met Wednesday in Tampa, Fla., with brothers Hal and Hank Steinbrenner, but the parameters of the agreement were set in place last weekend.

It’s Peavy in a landslide

Jake Peavy made it easy for the voters.

On the heels of claiming the pitching version of the Triple Crown, San Diego’s ace right-hander was the unanimous recipient of the 2007 National League Cy Young Award.

Peavy received all 32 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America. Arizona’s Brandon Webb, the 2006 winner, was a distant second.

With a 19-7 record, 2.54 earned run average and 240 strikeouts in 223 1/3 innings, Peavy topped the N.L. in the three major pitching categories: victories, ERA and strikeouts.

The only thing Peavy didn’t do was complete a game, more a sign of the times and a strong bullpen than anything else.

Eagles will dig for Sky title

The Eastern Washington University volleyball team will try to extend one streak and end another when it entertains Big Sky Conference rival Sacramento State tonight at 7 at Reese Court.

EWU (14-13, 12-3 Big Sky), which is aiming for its ninth straight win, can secure at least a share of the Big Sky title with a victory over the Hornets (25-6, 12-2). The Eagles have lost eight straight matches to Sacramento State, including a three-game road loss in October.

The teams have played in the Big Sky tournament championship match the last seven years.
