Teen who tortured kitten ordered into custody

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

A 16-year-old North Idaho boy who tortured a kitten by putting it in a freezer and then a microwave has been ordered held by the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections until he turns 19.

Officials euthanized the kitten. The unnamed minor, whose home life was described by his public defender as despairing, could be released earlier depending on his behavior and how he responds to treatment.

“Somebody needs to care about you,” said Magistrate Robert Burton in making his decision. “The state has the resources. I know you’re not happy. I want to give you an opportunity to live a decent life. This is not about locking you up. You need help.”

Burton said he was concerned the boy might commit suicide or hurt somebody if he didn’t receive therapy.
