Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Josef Vasicek’s short-handed goal in the second period lifted the New York Islanders over New Jersey 1-0 on Friday night in Newark, N.J., and prevented Devils goalie Martin Brodeur from reaching 500 wins.

Brodeur failed in his third try to become the second goaltender in NHL history to record 500 wins, behind Patrick Roy’s 551.

Thrashers 3, Hurricanes 0: At Raleigh, N.C., Marian Hossa had two goals and an assist, and goalie Johan Hedberg stopped the NHL’s highest-scoring team cold in Atlanta’s victory over Carolina.

Sabres 4, Canadiens 1: At Buffalo, N.Y., Clarke MacArthur scored twice and Ryan Miller made 36 saves to give the Sabres a win over Montreal.

Stars 6, Avalanche 1: At Dallas, Jussi Jokinen scored four goals, including a second-period hat track in about 7 minutes, and the Stars got the victory over Colorado to end a four-game home losing streak.

Lightning 5, Capitals 2: At Tampa, Fla., Vincent Lecavalier had a goal and two assists to extend his team record for consecutive multipoint games to seven and help Tampa Bay defeat Washington.

Blues 3, Blue Jackets 2: At St. Louis, Paul Kariya scored in the first period and set up Brad Boyes’ go-ahead goal with 2:27 to go in the Blues’ victory over Columbus.

Canucks 6, Wild 2: At Vancouver, British Columbia, six different players scored as the Canucks offense finally broke out and Vancouver defeated Minnesota.

Nashville agreement reached

A local investor group trying to buy the Nashville Predators reached an agreement with city officials on changes to the arena lease.

Mayor Karl Dean said the agreement guarantees the team will remain in Nashville for the next five years or the city’s financial investment will be paid back.
