Area Roundup : Bemis leads Cougs to win over Vandals

Brooke Bemis scored two goals in the first 7 minutes and Washington State cruised to a 4-0 shutout of Idaho in a non-conference women’s soccer match Friday in Moscow.

Kiersten Dallstream also scored and the Cougars added an own goal in the 83rd minute to cap the scoring.

With the win, WSU improved to 7-1-2 on the season while the Vandals fell to 4-6.

“Lauren Zuckerman scored in the seventh minute to give Gonzaga a 1-0 non-conference win at Oregon State.

Jessie Thalman recorded four saves for the Bulldogs to preserve the shutout.

GU improved to 8-2-1 while the Beavers dropped to 7-3-1.

“Whitworth scored four times in the second half and beat visiting Lewis & Clark 5-1 in a Northwest Conference match.

Lindsey Oakes led the Pirates with two goals and Greta Thibodeau, Kara Tisthammer and Tori Crain all scored goals in the second half.

Whitworth improved to 9-1 on the season and 6-1 in the NWC while the Pioneers fell to 1-7-1 and 1-6 in conference play.

“Jennifer Lenz’s hat trick powered Community Colleges of Spokane to a 7-0 NWAACC win over Skagit Valley at Spokane Falls Community College.

Patty Duncan, Lindsay Allred, Felicia Midili and Lindsay Hood also scored for the Sasquatch, who improved to 6-5-1 and 6-3-1 in conference play. The Cardinals dropped to 0-10 in the NWAACC.

Men’s soccer

Lewis and Clark High graduate Grant Lundberg scored the only goal of the match in the 60th minute to give Gonzaga a 1-0 West Coast Conference win over Saint Mary’s in Moraga, Calif.

With the victory, GU improved to 6-2-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in the WCC. The Gaels dropped to 4-3 and 0-1.

“Kevin Bourland and Jay Vela scored two goals apiece to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane to a 6-2 victory over Skagit Valley in a NWAACC match at Spokane Falls Community College.

Neil Bachman and Jesse Dunbar also scored for the Sasquatch, who improved to 10-2-1 and 9-1 in the NWAACC while the Cardinals fell to 0-10 in conference play.

“Washington fell 2-1 to No. 21 California in both teams’ Pac-10 Conference opener in Berkeley, Calif.

The Huskies fell to 5-4-1 overall while the Golden Bears improved to 6-2-1.

Volleyball

Sarah Reaves had a match-high 19 kills and Sydney Donahue added 19 digs as Arizona State defeated Washington State 30-21, 30-28, 30-17 in Pac-10 play in Pullman.

Adetokunbo Faleti had a team-high 11 kills to lead the Cougars, who dropped to 9-10 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

The Sun Devils improved to 10-9 and 2-4 in the Pac-10.

“Erica Jepsen had 15 kills and Marija Vojnovic added 11 kills and 14 digs as Portland State (13-4, 7-0 BSC) topped Eastern Washington 30-20, 30-25, 30-15 in a Big Sky Conference match in Portland.

Hayley Hills had 11 kills and 10 digs and Mandy Daniels added 11 digs to lead the Eagles (6-11, 5-2 BSC).

“Sarah Rusch had 19 kills and Tracy Schwada added 16 kills and 14 digs as Whitworth topped Lewis & Clark 28-30, 30-21, 30-28, 30-24 in a Northwest Conference match in Portland.

Cassie Moore added a match-high 29 digs for the Pirates, who improved to 9-7 and 4-4 in the NWC while the Pioneers fell to 6-11 and 2-5 in conference play.

“CC Spokane (16-8) went 2-1 at the Clackamas Crossover Tournament in Portland. The Sasquatch beat Highline 30-25, 31-19 and Everett 30-15, 30-25 before falling 30-18, 30-27 to Linn-Benton.

“Stevie Mussie had 16 kills and nine digs and Jenna Hagglund dished out 44 assists as No. 8 Washington topped Arizona 30-15, 30-14, 30-22 in a Pac-10 Conference match in Seattle.

With the win, the Huskies improved to 16-0 and 5-0 in the Pac-10 while the Wildcats fell to 12-6 and 2-4 in conference play.

Hockey

Connor Olstad, Jake Walsh and Tanner Slarks all scored in a shootout to give the Spokane Braves a 3-2 win over host Creston Valley in a KIJHL game.

Football

Wide receiver Kelvin Dickens, who had 57 receptions and 11 touchdowns last season, is the third member of the 2007 Spokane Shock to re-sign with the af2 team.

Golf

Professional Reid Hatley (Ferris High) of Black Rock and amateur Darren Titus of Avondale shot a two-round total of 137 to win the Maui Jim Pro-Amateur four-ball competition in Gleneden Beach, Ore., by one stroke.
