In brief: Sinto center will install new floors

Scott Niemeier, director of the Sinto Senior Activity Center, reported receiving $7,495 in community development funds from the West Central Neighborhood Steering Committee to pay for installation of new flooring in the dining room and kitchen.

The project was being sent out to bid, according to a city report.

Fire Dist. 9 honors New York visitors

Fire District No. 9 has awarded Brian Russo and Anne Selcoe with certificates of appreciation.

Russo and Selcoe, native New Yorkers, produced two performances of “The Guys,” a play about a group of firefighters who died during the attacks of 9/11.

The profits of the performances benefited the Shriner Children Hospital Burn Centers.

Fire Chief Robert Anderson presented the two actors with the certificates.

Oaxaca will be topic of lecture

Whitworth University will present Centolia Maldonado Vasquez, a community leader from Oaxaca, Mexico, who will speak on the topic “The Roots of Migration: Free Trade, Immigration and Indigenous Rights in Oaxaca” on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Vasquez has been promoting participation in indigenous community-development projects and will demonstrate how globalization, the U.S. trade policy and more have contributed to conflict and social movement in Oaxaca.

There will be an English-to-Spanish translator at the event.

Oct. 22 last day to register to vote

The Nov. 6 general election is fast approaching.

If you haven’t registered to vote yet, (the deadline was Sunday), you may apply in person at the Spokane County Elections office, 1033 W. Gardner Ave., by Oct. 22.

Signup under way for county hoops

The Spokane County Parks and Recreation Men’s and Women’s Basketball League is looking for players.

The eight-game season begins Nov. 26 and ends with a double-elimination tournament. Team registration fees $320 and player fees are $320 for 8 players. Additional players are $40 each.

Dodgeball tourney signup under way

The Spokane County Parks and Recreation is holding its Haunting Halloween Hit & Run Dodgeball Tournament on Oct. 26 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at North Side and Valley locations.

Registration deadline is Oct. 17. The cost is $60 per team, which must be coed adult teams. All players will receive a T-shirt and winners will receive trophies.

Octobrewfest benefits MS

The Inland Northwest Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is holding Octobrewfest, a microbrew tasting and auction, on Oct. 20 at the Spokane Fair & Expo Center.

The event starts at 6 p.m. and features an evening of sampling brew from Northwest breweries and bidding on silent and live auction items. Patrons must be at least 21 years old. Admission includes four beer sample tokens, commemorative mug and beer and auction catalogue.

Theater presents ‘Laramie Project’

StageWest Community Theatre in Cheney will present “The Laramie Project,” Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m., Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 20 and 21 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of Cheney City Hall, 609 Second St.

The play focuses on the community of Laramie, Wyo., in the days following the death of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming.

Tickets are $10 and are available by calling the theatre at 235-4575.

McDonald House seeks volunteers

The Ronald McDonald House of Spokane, 1015 W. Fifth Ave., is looking for volunteers.

Volunteers can expect to answer telephones, do some light housekeeping and assist staff and guests.

The organization hopes to find volunteers willing to commit eight or more hours a month for a minimum of six months.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and pass a Washington State Patrol background check.

Habitat benefit auction Oct. 19

Habitat for Humanity-Spokane will hold its 12th annual Raise the Roof Auction to provide funds for another Habitat Home.

The auction will be held Oct. 19 at Northern Quest Casino Pavilion, 100 N. Hayford Road, Airway Heights.

There will be a silent auction at 5 p.m., dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and a live auction will follow dinner.

Items up on the block include vacations to Mexico, fly-fishing trips, art, dinner parties, entertainment and home and yard packages.
