NASCAR NEXTEL CUP
Bank of America 500
Site: Concord, N.C. Schedule: Thursday, qualifying (ESPN2, 4 p.m.); Saturday, race (ABC, 4 p.m.). Track: Lowe’s Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 501 miles, 334 laps. Last race: Jeff Gordon surged into the lead on the final lap at Talladega Superspeedway then held off teammate Jimmie Johnson to move back on top of the points standings with six races remaining in the Chase for the championship. He leads Johnson by nine points. Last year: Kasey Kahne led a race-high 134 laps en route to his sixth win of 2006 and a season sweep at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Jeff Burton overcame a pit-road miscue to finish third, and retain his hold on the championship standings. Fast facts: Gordon’s win at Talladega was his 12th on a restrictor-plate track, moving him past the late Dale Earnhardt for most all-time. … Johnson and Gordon have combined for nine wins at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, but Gordon has failed to finish any of the last five Cup points events at the track. … Non-Chase drivers have won 11 Chase races since the format was introduced in 2004. … Dave Blaney’s third-place finish last weekend was the best for a Toyota driver this year. … Juan Pablo Montoya increased his lead in the Rookie of the Year standings to 15 points over David Ragan. … Ricky Rudd will get back behind the wheel of the Robert Yates Racing No. 88 Ford this week after missing five weeks with a separated shoulder. Next race: Subway 500, Oct. 21, Martinsville, Va.
NASCAR BUSCH
Dollar General 300
Site: Concord, N.C. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (ESPN2, 1 p.m.), race (ESPN2, 4:30 p.m.). Track: Lowe’s Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps. Last race: Kyle Busch slipped inside of Matt Kenseth with just over 17 laps to go, then held off Kenseth’s challenges after a late restart to win at Kansas Speedway on Sept. 29. But Busch’s car failed the post-race inspection because the intake manifold did not meet NASCAR specifications, which will likely result in a penalty. Last year: Dave Blaney wound up the winner at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in a finish that included red-flag stoppages for a scoring glitch and a crash by Carl Edwards and Casey Mears while battling for the win. The crash by Edwards relegated him to a 27th-place finish and gave Kevin Harvick, who came back from an early tire problem and a lost lap to finish ninth, his second Busch championship. Fast facts: Edwards will win the championship if he leaves Concord with a lead of 781 or more points. He currently leads second-place David Reutimann by 696 points. … Jason Keller will try to qualify for his 418th race this weekend, which would move him past Tommy Houston for most in a career. … David Ragan holds a 24-point lead over Marcos Ambrose in the Rookie of the Year standings despite an average finish of 35th the last three races. Next race: Sam’s Town 250, Oct. 27, Memphis, Tenn.
NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS
Last race: Todd Bodine barely held off Rick Crawford and Johnny Benson in a three-wide finish at Talladega Superspeedway. Bodine was out front for a restart with two laps to go on the 2.66-mile oval, with Crawford and Benson close behind in a single-file line of competitors. It stayed that way until the final corner of the 94-lap race, when Crawford drove high on the steeply banked track and Benson ducked below Bodine. That’s the way they drove across the finish line, with Bodine beating Crawford by 0.014 seconds — about the length of a hood Next race: Kroger 250, Oct. 20, Martinsville, Va.
CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES
Last race: Justin Wilson won the Dutch Grand Prix on Sept. 2, holding off Jan Heylen of Belgium to clinch his first race of the season. Sebastien Bourdais’ hopes of clinching a fourth straight title were hampered after a poor start forced him to drop from the pole position. It was the Frenchman’s first loss in four races in Europe. Bourdais, who finished seventh, has a 58-point lead over Wilson. Next race: Lexmark Indy 300, Oct. 21, Surfers Paradise, Australia.
FORMULA ONE
Last race: Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari won the Chinese Formula One Grand Prix and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren missed his chance to clinch the drivers’ title by spinning out entering the pits. The championship will go down to the final race in Brazil on Oct. 21 with three drivers capable of winning the title. Hamilton has 107 points, Alonso has 103 and Raikkonen 100. Points are awarded on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. Next race: Brazilian Grand Prix, Oct. 21, Sao Paulo
NHRA
Last event: Four-time series champion Gary Scelzi earned one of four berths in the two-race championship, beating teammate Ron Capps in the Funny Car final in the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park. Scelzi, who jumped from sixth to second place, was joined in the winner’s circle by Top Fuel’s Doug Kalitta and Pro Stock’s Dave Connolly, who has won five straight races overall to take the No. 1 seed in the Countdown to 1. Next event: ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, Oct. 28
INDY RACING LEAGUE
Last race: Dario Franchitti claimed an unlikely victory at Chicagoland Speedway on Sept. 9 and won his first IndyCar Series title in what was his farewell to open-wheel racing. The difference for Franchitti in the PEAK Antifreeze Indy 300 was his ability to squeeze out half a lap more than Scott Dixon on their final load of fuel, with the New Zealander running out of ethanol while leading two turns from the end of the 200-lap race. Franchitti is moving to NASCAR in 2008.
