Mats Sundin set two Toronto records on one play and the Maple Leafs routed the New York Islanders 8-1 on Thursday night in Toronto.

Sundin scored his 390th goal for his 917th point to break ties with Darryl Sittler for club records in both categories.

It wasn’t a pretty goal. In fact, it was an attempted pass. The puck caromed off the skate blade of Islanders defenseman Brendan Witt and past Wade Dubielewicz at 9:54 of the third period.

When Sundin went to the bench, his teammates stood and banged their sticks against the boards while the announced crowd of 19,319 stood and cheered the Leafs’ Swedish captain.

Sabres 6, Thrashers 0: At Buffalo, N.Y., Ryan Miller made 20 saves for his fifth career shutout, Tim Connolly and Brian Campbell each had a goal and two assists and the Sabres got their first win of the season, a victory over Atlanta.

Derek Roy, Ales Kotalik and Daniel Paille added a goal and an assist each, and Jason Pominville also scored for the Sabres. Buffalo scored three power-play goals in the first period.

Panthers 3, Devils 0: At Sunrise, Fla., Tomas Vokoun stopped 28 shots and Florida earned a win over New Jersey.

Rostislav Olesz, Olli Jokinen and Nathan Horton scored for the Panthers.

Martin Brodeur made 28 saves for the Devils. New Jersey is opening the season on a nine-game road trip while construction is completed on its new arena.

Florida outshot New Jersey 31-28.

Hurricanes 5, Senators 3: At Ottawa, Erik Cole scored twice and Chad Larose had three assists, helping Carolina end the Senators’ season-opening, five-game winning streak.

Coyotes 6, Predators 3: At Nashville, Tenn., Fredrik Sjostrom scored two goals and Derek Morris, Martin Hanzal and Radim Vrbata each had a goal and an assist to lead Phoenix over the Predators.

Kesler calls for suspension

Vancouver Canucks center Ryan Kesler called for Philadelphia Flyers enforcer Jesse Boulerice to receive a 20-game suspension for cross-checking him in the head on Wednesday night in Vancouver.

Boulerice faces an automatic review by NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell after he received a match penalty and game misconduct for the incident in the third period of Philadelphia’s 8-2 victory in Vancouver on Wednesday night.

On Thursday, Kesler said the punishment should be on par with the 20-game suspension that Flyers rookie Steve Downie received for leaving his feet and delivering a shoulder to the head of Ottawa’s Dean McAmmond in the preseason. Downie is now in the minors.
