Cabrera downs Casey in World Match Play

U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera eliminated titleholder Paul Casey 4 and 3 Friday in the second round of the World Match Play Championship in Virginia Water, England.

Six-time champion Ernie Els kept his bid for a seventh title alive by ousting Andres Romero 6 and 5, while Henrik Stenson and Hunter Mahan also advanced to the semifinals.

Stenson had an impressive 7 and 6 victory over Anders Hansen.

Mahan, the last of three Americans left in the tournament, trounced Soren Hansen 6 and 4.

In today’s semifinals, Cabrera plays Mahan and Stenson meets Els.

•Garrett Willis shot a 10-under 62 on the TPC Summerlin course in Las Vegas for a share of the second-round lead in the Frys.com Open.

D.J. Trahan and George McNeill matched Willis at 13-under 130.

•Bernhard Langer shot a 10-under-par 62 to take a four-stroke lead after the first round of the Champions Tour Administaff Small Business Classic in Spring, Texas.

•Defending champion Lorena Ochoa shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the Samsung World Championship in Palm Desert, Calif.

Ochoa’s bogey-free round moved her to 9-under 135 through 36 holes, one shot in front of Paula Creamer, Angela Park and Angela Stanford.

Gator player killed

A walk-on defensive back for the Florida Gators was killed in Gainesville, Fla., when the motorcycle he was driving hit a median at a high rate of speed, police said.

Michael Guilford, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman from Quincy, Fla., was not wearing a helmet. Neither was passenger Ashley Slonina, a Florida junior who also died in the crash.

•Suspended Penn State running back Austin Scott is charged with raping a woman at his campus apartment after meeting her at a bar.

Scott was arraigned on charges of rape, sexual assault and two counts of aggravated indecent assault.

•Former Louisville linebacker Willie Williams, dismissed from the team after being charged with marijuana possession, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor in Louisville, Ky.

Tennis groups meet

The International Tennis Federation, the ATP, the WTA Tour and the Grand Slam Committee met in London to discuss the issue of match-fixing, three days after 18th-ranked Andy Murray said fixed matches are common knowledge.

Match-fixing rumors have swirled around tennis the last few months. An online betting site, in an unprecedented move, voided bets on a match in August involving Nikolay Davydenko because of irregular betting patterns.

•Etan Thomas was recovering from open heart surgery in Washington, and the doctor who performed the operation didn’t rule out the possibility of the Wizards’ center returning to play in the NBA this season.

Thomas was diagnosed with a leaking aortic valve following a routine physical last week.

•David Beckham will miss the Los Angeles Galaxy’s home soccer game against Toronto FC at Carson, Calif., with a right knee injury.
