Area roundup: Buckenberger will retire as Whitworth softball coach

Third-year Whitworth University softball coach Fuzzy Buckenberger has announced that the upcoming season will be his last at the school.

“I have been dealing with on-going health issues, and I will now have more time for my business and family,” the 59-year-old Buckenberger said. “The commitment needed to run the program has taken a lot of time.”

Buckenberger, a Hall of Fame player and coach, has led the Pirates to a 56-20 record in two seasons. His 2006 team qualified for the NCAA Division III national tournament.

Volleyball

Kaitlin Sather led a trio of Bruins in double figures with 17 kills and UCLA (16-4, 6-3) swept Washington State 33-31, 30-18, 30-23 in Pacific-10 Conference play at Pullman.

Tara West had 11 kills to lead the Cougars (9-14, 0-9).

“Christal Morrison had 17 kills and five blocks and Stevie Mussie had 13 kills and 13 digs to lead the Washington Huskies (19-1, 8-1) to a 30-26, 30-28, 30-19 Pac-10 Conference sweep of USC (17-3, 6-3) at Seattle.

“Sarah Rusch had 18 kills and seven blocks to lead the Whitworth Pirates (10-10, 5-6) to a 34-32, 28-30, 30-27, 30-22 Northwest Conference victory over Willamette (3-17, 0-11) at Whitworth, ending a three-match losing streak.

Nikki Bardwell added 14 kills for the Pirates, while Holly Tomlin had 13 and Cassie Moore had 11.

“Samantha Richard had 13 kills and three aces and Salt Lake CC (36-1, 7-0) held North Idaho to an .075 hitting percentage in a 30-17, 30-27, 30-23 Scenic West Athletic Conference victory at Salt Lake City. Amanda Misa led NIC (18-8, 5-3) with seven kills.

Women’s soccer

Allison Scurich and Kiersten Dallstream scored goals to lead Washington State (9-2-2, 2-1) to a 2-1 Pac-10 Conference victory over Washington (4-9, 1-2).

“Cyeeta Mott scored her school-record 12th career goal to tie the game and Brittney Doran scored the game-winner on a penalty kick a little less than nine minutes later to lead Eastern Washington (6-6, 1-2) to a 2-1 Big Sky Conference victory over Portland State (4-5-2, 1-1-1) at Cheney.

“Jennie Jarvie scored two goals to lead San Francisco (2-8-3, 2-0) to a 3-0 West Coast Conference victory over visiting Gonzaga (8-5-1, 0-2).

“Rachel Lopez scored in the 65th minute to give North Idaho a 1-0 Scenic West Athletic Conference win over host Salt Lake.

Men’s soccer

Ely Allen scored a hat trick and the Washington Huskies (6-5-2, 1-2-1) ended a four-match winless streak with a 3-1 Pacific-10 Conference victory over San Diego State (7-2-3, 3-1) at Seattle.

The Spokane Shock announced the addition of former Clemson defensive back Sergio Gilliam to its arenafootball2 roster.
