Catholicism and culture

Gonzaga University will host guest George Weigel discussing “The Courage to be Catholic: John Paul II’s Challenge” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Cataldo Hall on the Gonzaga University campus.

Weigel, a Roman Catholic theologian and senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, is the author of the Pope John Paul II biography “Witness to Hope.”

The talk is part of the university’s Catholicism and Culture lecture series.

The Gospel of Matthew

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist will host a daylong program on “Spirituality of the Gospel of Matthew” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday. The program will look at Gospel readings that will be used in the church during the liturgical year that begins in December.

New Testament scholar and Gonzaga University professor emeritus Leonard Doohan will lead the discussion.

Catholic men’s retreat

The 10th annual North Idaho Retreat for Catholic Men is set for Friday through Oct. 28 at Camp N-Sid-Sen on Lake Coeur d’Alene. The theme of the weekend is “Jesus Teach Us How to Pray.”

The retreat will be led by evangelist and author Peter Herbeck. He is vice president and director of mission for Renewal Ministries and the author of “When the Spirit Comes in Power.”

Craft show

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will present its third annual craft show next Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to a large selection of holiday crafts, there will be a chili competition.

Tables are $10 for crafters. Admission is free for shoppers.

Harvest festival

The Lutheran Church of the Master in Coeur d’Alene is inviting the community to a harvest festival at the church next Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be carnival games, prizes for kids, food and other activities.
