Gonzaga ties No. 3 Santa Clara

Despite being outshot 25-10, Gonzaga got a career-high 11 saves from goaltender Vito Higgins and Tim Muravez scored a goal and the 28th-ranked Bulldogs’ men’s soccer team managed a 1-1 West Coast Conference tie against third-ranked Santa Clara University Sunday afternoon at Santa Clara, Calif.

Muravez opened the scoring at 16 minutes, 54 seconds with an assist by George Josten to give the Bulldogs (8-3-2, 3-1-2) a 1-0 lead.

Higgins held the Broncos (9-1-4, 4-0-2) scoreless until Jide Ogunbiyi broke through with his fifth goal, at 77:20, to tie it.

•Skye Henderson and John Prugh each scored goals to give Whitworth (12-2-1, 10-1) a 2-0 Northwest Conference victory over visiting Willamette (2-12-2, 0-10-1).

•Kyle Nakazawa scored in the final minute to give UCLA (7-5-2, 3-1-1) a 3-2 Pac-10 win over Washington (6-6-2, 1-3-1) at Seattle.

Women’s soccer

Jamie Blanche had a goal and an assist to give Gonzaga University (9-5-1, 1-2) a 2-0 West Coast Conference victory over Saint Mary’s College (6-7-2, 0-3) at Moraga, Calif.

•Katie McCoy scored two goals to give Sacramento State University (10-3-4, 2-0-2) a 4-0 Big Sky Conference victory over Eastern Washington University (6-7, 1-3) at Cheney.

•The University of Idaho scored early but Boise State University scored often.

Anna Edmonds headed in Britta Rustad’s corner kick at the 22:58 mark to give the Vandals (4-9-1, 0-2-1) a 1-0 lead, but Boise State (7-5-2, 3-0) responded with five straight goals – two by Shannon Saxton – to take a 5-1 Western Athletic Conference victory at Boise.

•Jael Hagerott’s goal in the 84th minute lifted Whitworth (14-1, 11-1) to a 1-0 Northwest Conference win over visiting Willamette (4-8-2, 3-7-2).

Women’s golf

Mariesa Stombaugh shot rounds of 88 and 77 to lead Whitworth to a second-place finish (676) at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic in Mission, Ore.

It was Whitworth’s best finish in a NWC-counting tournament. Pacific won with a score of 665.

•Karinn Dickinson shot her third-straight round of 4-over 75 to finish 32nd and the Washington Huskies carded a final round 34-over 318 to finish tied for 13th place at the Stanford Intercollegiate at Palo Alto, Calif.

Washington State finished 18th. The Cougars’ top individual performance was turned in by Amy Eneroth, who tied for 47th with a 233.

Junior hockey

Skyler Smutek scored an unassisted goal in overtime to lead the Spokane Braves (9-5-2-0) to a 5-4 KIJHL victory over the Fernie Ghostriders (9-5-2-0) at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
