Weather Extremes

For the week of Oct. 14 to 20, 171 records were broken. Most of the extremes were precipitation with a total of 76. There were 62 high temperature records, three low and three snowfall extremes.

The southeastern United States saw moderate to heavy rain last week. Pensacola, Fla., recorded an amazing 8.95 inches of rain Thursday with 3.36 inches more the next day. Apalachicola, Fla., measured 3.53 inches of moisture Friday as well. Rainfall records also fell across the central U.S., the Northeast and the Far West.

On Friday, Stanley, Idaho picked up 2.08 inches of rain. On that same day, Olympia measured 1.26 inches.

Last week also brought some hot weather in the southern U.S. Record low 90s were felt in Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas. On Friday, Wichita Falls, Texas, soared to a record high of 94 degrees.

By contrast, Cold Bay, Alaska, dipped into the 20s on Thursday and Friday. Cold Bay also received a record 3.7 inches of snow Oct. 14.
