Wildcats prevail over Pirates

The defending champion Linfield Wildcats withstood a second-day charge by the Whitworth Pirates to win the Northwest Conference Men’s Fall Golf Classic on Monday at Spokane Country Club.

Linfield finished with a two-day total of 604. Whitworth, who entered the final round in fourth place, carded a 297 to finish at 608.

Chris Packard of Pacific Lutheran earned medalist honors with a 1-under-par 143 total. Jordan Carter of Whitworth and Linfield’s Tyler Nelson tied for second with 148s.

•Zach Bixler shot a 5-over-par 221 to tie for eighth place and help the Washington Huskies finish sixth at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.

UCLA won the team title with a 54-hole total of 15-over 879 – six strokes ahead of runnerup Michigan State.

The Spartans’ Ryan Brehm took home medalist honors with a 6-under 210.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth’s Keith Kirsch was named the Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week after his two goals and two assists led the Pirates to victories over George Fox and Willamette.

Volleyball

Eastern Washington’s Hayley Hills was named the Co-Big Sky Conference Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to a pair of road victories over Idaho State and Weber State.

Hills, who shared the honor with Northern Arizona’s Kim Babcock, averaged 5.38 kills and 3.38 digs in the two matches.
