NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Pep Boys Auto 500

Site: Hampton, Ga. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (ESPN2, 4 p.m.); race, Sunday (ABC, 10 a.m.). Track: Atlanta Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.54 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 500.5 miles, 325 laps. Last race: Jimmie Johnson made the pass he didn’t allow Jeff Gordon to make in the spring, sneaking inside his Hendrick Motorsports teammate with 44 laps to go in regulation and holding on for his series-high seventh victory of the year and the 30th of his career. A record 21 caution flags flew, slowing the proceedings for 127 laps, and forcing the race to be extended by six laps. Johnson gained in the championship chase with four races remaining, cutting Gordon’s lead to 53 points. Last year: Tony Stewart held off Johnson and won at Atlanta Motor Speedway for his fourth victory of the season and second in the first seven races of the 2006 playoffs. Fast facts: Johnson, who won at Atlanta on March 18, will be trying for his second track sweep in as many weeks and third this season. … Stewart has 11 top-10 finishes in his last 12 starts at Atlanta. He finished second to Johnson in the spring event after winning last year’s race. … Gordon, then 21, made his Cup debut at the 1992 event. Also that day, seven-time champion Richard Petty made his 1,185th and final career start. … Carl Edwards, who trails fourth-place Stewart by 36 points, swept both Atlanta races in 2005. … Bobby Labonte will be making his 30th career start at Atlanta and leads all active drivers with six victories. Gordon has four. Next race: Dickies 500, Nov. 4, Fort Worth, Texas

NASCAR BUSCH

Sam’s Town 250

Site: Memphis, Tenn. Schedule: Saturday, qualifying, 7:35 a.m., race (ESPN2, 12 p.m.). Track: Memphis Motorsports Park (oval, .75 miles, 11 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 187.5 miles, 250 laps. Last race: Jeff Burton came from the back of the field to win the crash-filled race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Oct. 12. Burton, who moved steadily through the field after having to start from the rear because of an engine change, took the lead and control with 61 laps to go in the Dollar General 300. Last year: Kevin Harvick raced to his eighth Busch victory of 2006, capitalizing on Carl Edwards’ sloppy restart in overtime at Memphis Motorsports Park to pull to the front and lead teammate Clint Bowyer across the finish line. Fast facts: Edwards will clinch the title if he finishes eighth or better or leaves with at least a 585-point lead in the standings. Edwards currently leads David Reutimann by 638 points, meaning he can lose 53 points and still hoist the championship trophy. He finished in the top five in his two previous Busch starts at Memphis, while Reutimann placed 12th in his only series appearance in 2002. … Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti is expected to make his Busch debut this weekend. … Chase Austin, who turned 18 less than a month ago, will attempt to become only the second black driver to compete in a Busch race. Bill Lester first did it in 1999. … Bowyer won the 2005 event from the 35th starting position. Next race: O’Reilly Challenge, Nov. 3, Fort Worth, Texas

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

EasyCare Vehicle Services Contract 200

Site: Hampton, Ga. Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 6:30 a.m.), race (Speed Channel, 9:30 a.m.). Track: Atlanta Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.54 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 200.2 miles, 130 laps. Last race: Mike Skinner sneaked into the lead and held off Jack Sprague for the final 66 laps, helped along by numerous cautions that made the Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway look like a brawl. The race was red-flagged with seven laps to go after an accident coming out of Turn 4 that involved at least nine trucks and left wreckage and fluid strewn everywhere. It went back to green for a three-lap dash to the finish, and with the trucks behind him jockeying, Skinner sailed off to his series-best fifth victory of the season. Last year: Skinner started last week’s race 14 points behind Ron Hornaday Jr. in the championship battle and left Martinsville 11 points ahead, the fourth time in the last five races the drivers have swapped the top spot. It is the closest margin with four races remaining in series history. … Skinner won at Atlanta on March 16, the second of his record-tying three straight wins. … Dario Franchitti, who won the Indianapolis 500 and the IndyCar Series championship this year, made his NASCAR debut in last week’s race. He qualified 30th and finished 33rd. Colin Braun also made his debut and finished 34th after an accident. … Dennis Setzer has three top-10 finishes in as many starts for Bobby Hamilton Racing. … Will Allen has a six-point lead over Tim Sauter in the Rookie of the Year standings. Next race: Silverado 350, Nov. 2, Fort Worth, Texas

NHRA

ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals

Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 1 p.m.; Saturday, qualifying, 11:30 a.m. (ESPN2, 7 p.m., tape); Sunday, eliminations, 11 a.m. (ESPN2, 4 p.m., tape). Track: The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Last event: Four-time series champion Gary Scelzi earned one of four berths in the two-race championship, beating teammate Ron Capps in the Funny Car final in the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park on Oct. 7. Scelzi, who jumped from sixth to second place, was joined in the winner’s circle by Top Fuel’s Doug Kalitta and Pro Stock’s Dave Connolly, who has won five straight races overall to take the No. 1 seed in the Countdown to 1. Last year: Jason Line lost to Richie Stevens Jr. in the Pro Stock final in the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, but still clinched the season championship. Tony Schumacher won Top Fuel, Jack Beckman topped the Funny Car division and Andrew Hines moved atop the Pro Stock motorcycle standings. Fast facts: This is the first of two events to decide the season’s champions. … Capps secured the fourth and final berth in Funny Car with his semifinal win over Tim Wilkerson at Virginia. Tony Pedregon and Robert Hight, first and third, respectively, are the other two finalists in that category’s Countdown to 1. … Brandon Bernstein, Larry Dixon, Rod Fuller and Tony Schumacher are the Top Fuel finalists. … Greg Anderson is the No. 2 seed in Pro Stock, followed by Jeg Coughlin and Allen Johnson, who clinched the fourth and final Pro Stock berth when fifth-place Kurt Johnson was eliminated in the second round. Next event: Automobile Club of Southern California Finals, Nov. 4, Pomona, Calif.

CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES

Last race: Needing only to finish 12th or better, Formula One-bound Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais won the Lexmark Indy 300 in Australia to clinch his fourth straight drivers’ title. Bourdais took the lead for good with 20 minutes left in the 1 hour, 45-minute timed race and became the first driver to win the race twice in its 17-year history. Bourdais has clinched the championship in Australia the last three years. Next race: Mexico Grand Prix, Nov. 11, Mexico City

FORMULA ONE

Last race: Kimi Raikkonen won the Brazilian Grand Prix to capture the title in the tightest race for the championship in 21 years. The Ferrari driver rallied from third place in the points standings for his first F1 crown, taking advantage of Lewis Hamilton’s mistake on the first lap and Fernando Alonso’s disappointing run. Raikkonen grabbed the lead with 21 laps to go and was followed by teammate Felipe Massa. Alonso, Hamilton’s McLaren teammate, finished third.

INDY RACING LEAGUE

Last race: Dario Franchitti claimed an unlikely victory at Chicagoland Speedway on Sept. 9 and won his first IndyCar Series title in his farewell to open-wheel racing. The difference for Franchitti in the PEAK Antifreeze Indy 300 was his ability to squeeze out half a lap more than Scott Dixon on their final load of fuel, with the New Zealander running out of ethanol while leading two turns from the end of the 200-lap race. Franchitti is moving to NASCAR in 2008.
