A former Kootenai County inmate’s claim that jail overcrowding led to an ankle injury has been dismissed.

Charles A. Marston sued Kootenai County in federal court, alleging that cramped conditions at the jail in December 2005 resulted in too many inmates being housed in close quarters. Marston, 31, claimed he broke his ankle when he was getting down from a bunk bed and tried to avoid stepping on another inmate sleeping on the floor.

U.S. Magistrate Mikel H. Williams dismissed the suit this week, ordering Marston and Kootenai County to pay their own legal costs.

Kootenai County Attorney Darrin Murphey said the county did not pay any money to Marston to settle the claim. The county’s insurer, Idaho Counties Risk Management Plan, declined to release information on the case, saying the claim was still open.

Marston is incarcerated at the Twin Falls Community Work Center, serving a sentence for burglary-related charges.

He is set to be released in January.

Job fair planned to help veterans

A regional job fair will be held Nov. 7 in Post Falls to help Idaho servicemen and women successfully make the transition back to civilian life.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Idaho National Guard Armory, 5453 E. Seltice Way, Post Falls.

Scores of employers will attend with job opportunities for veterans.

About 130,000 Idaho residents are veterans and more than 17,000 are seeking employment.

That doesn’t include recent reserve and guard members returning to Idaho after major overseas deployments.

Idaho is participating in the national HireVetsFirst campaign, developed by the President’s National Hire Veterans Committee.

The program’s goal is to give veterans access to employment and training opportunities and encourage companies and businesses to consider veterans for job and career opportunities.
