Huskies too much for Cougars

Becky Perry had 13 kills and four blocks to lead the fourth-ranked Washington volleyball team to a 30-25, 30-21, 30-24 Pac-10 Conference win over Washington State Friday in Seattle.

Jackie Albright had 10 kills and Kelly Hyder had 23 digs to lead the Cougars, who fell to 9-15 and 0-10 in the Pac-10 while the Huskies improved to 20-1 and 9-1.

•Monica Groves had 20 kills to lead Puget Sound to a 30-22, 30-23, 27-30, 30-21 Northwest Conference win over Whitworth in Tacoma.

The Pirates fell to 10-12 and 5-8 in the NWC while the Loggers improved to 14-8 and 9-4.

•Alyssa Wistrick had 11 kills and Brianne Barton added 10 to lead College of Southern Idaho to a 30-21, 30-24, 30-21 non-conference win over CC of Spokane at Spokane Falls Community College.

Miranda Gouin dished out 20 assists to lead the Sasquatch, who fell to 22-12. The Golden Eagles improved to 31-10.

Men’s soccer

Senior George Josten scored his second goal of the match in the 88th minute to help Gonzaga earn a 2-2 tie with Portland in a West Coast Conference match at GU’s Martin Field.

Josten scored his first goal in the 28th minute after Eric Fredback gave the Pilots a 1-0 lead 6 minutes into the match.

The Bulldogs moved to 8-3-3 and 3-1-3 in conference play. The tie dropped GU into third place behind Santa Clara and San Diego. Portland is 7-6-1 and 4-1-1.

Women’s soccer

Miranda Montejo scored a penalty-kick goal in the 85th minute to give Nevada a 2-1 win over the University of Idaho in a Western Athletic Conference match in Moscow, Idaho.

Idaho dropped to 4-10-1 and 0-3-1 in the WAC while Nevada improved to 6-8-1 and 2-3.

•Brooke Bemis scored off an assist from Mallory Fox in the 85th minute to help Washington State preserve a 1-1 tie with Oregon in a Pac-10 Conference match in Pullman.

The Cougars (9-2-3, 2-1-1) held a 23-12 advantage in shots over the Ducks (8-6-2, 1-2-2).

•Washington and Oregon State played to a 1-1 tie in a Pac-10 match at Husky Field in Seattle.

The Huskies are 4-9-1 and 1-2-1 in the Pac-10 and the Beavers are 7-7-2, 0-4-1.

Wrestling

North Idaho won six of 10 matches, including major decisions by Chris Harris (141 pounds) and Lucas Chesher (157 pounds), and beat visiting Great Falls 21-20 in the Cardinals’ first dual of the season.

Harris defeated Jeff Trafelet 12-1 while Chesher beat Jacob Butenhoff 18-9.

Rowing

The Washington State women defeated Gonzaga while the Bulldogs men beat the Cougars at the Head of the Snake at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.

WSU’s varsity 8 finished the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 22.49 seconds. GU’s varsity 8 finished third in 20:42.37.

The Cougars’ novice 8 and second novice 8 also posted wins over GU.

The Bulldogs men’s varsity 8 finished in 18:18.02, nearly 4 seconds ahead of WSU.

Gonzaga’s novice 8+ and junior varsity 8+ boats were also victorious.
