Lewiston defeats Lake City to make playoffs, set up rematch next week

The Spokesman-Review

Lewiston, led by its senior duo of Tom Kerr and P.J. Munoz, beat Lake City 26-14 Friday night to secure both the Inland Empire League championship and a home playoff game.

Munoz had six catches for 98 yards and three touchdowns. Kerr went 11 of 19 for 160 yards and four touchdowns.

Lake City quarterback Zach Clanton tried to take the game into his own hands, completing 16 of 31 passes for 82 yards and running 20 times for 88 yards. He was intercepted once and several of his passes were knocked down or dropped by defenders.

Lake City coach Van Troxel had an easy explanation for the team’s loss.

“This game isn’t that complicated. The team that blocks and tackles the best is going to win,” he said. “Lewiston blocked and tackled better than we did. They deserved to win.”

Lewiston’s win means Lewiston and Lake City advance to play in state playoffs.

The two teams meet again Friday night in Lewiston.

Lakeland 31, Moscow 6: Shawn Hiebert scored three touchdowns, and Lakeland scored 31 unanswered points after trailing early in a rout of Moscow in an Inland Empire League football game at Rathdrum.

The Hawks (6-3, 2-0) clinched a state playoff berth with the victory and also captured the IEL 4A title. They will be hosts to Kuna in their state opener. Kuna defeated Mountain Home 46-27 to earn their trip.

Moscow led 6-3 at halftime, but Lakeland turned three Bears (3-6, 0-2) turnovers into three touchdowns in the second half to take control.

“It feels amazing,” Hiebert said of Lakeland’s state berth. “This is the first time in a long time at Lakeland. We’re in the record books now.”

Hiebert scored two touchdowns in a 4 1/2-minute span in the third quarter to turn Lakeland’s three-point deficit into a 17-6 lead. Both scores followed Moscow turnovers, one a fumble at the Bears’ 27-yard-line and the other an interception at the Moscow 31.

Timberlake 56, Bonners Ferry 8: Nick Puckett ran for 226 yards and scored three total touchdowns as host Timberlake routed Bonners Ferry in a 3A play-in game at Spirit Lake.

Brian Maldanado and Levi Powers each threw touchdown passes for the Tigers (7-2), who led 35-0 after the first quarter.

Timberlake will host the winner of today’s Kellogg-Weiser game next Saturday.

The Badgers (2-7) had their season end.
