John Kory, of Hauser, is going into partnership with his son in a new company named “Heavy Tug.” Basically, it will haul anything (legal), anywhere in the Western United States.

Kory retired from being a civil servant from the Department of Defense 25 years ago. He rebuilt tanks and HMMWV’s, developed the performance and labor standards for the rebuilding and reconditioning of equipment for Class One and Class Two engineering time standards and even lived and worked in the Grand Teton National Park. Retired and re-retired to Hauser, Kory started a new adventure with his son, Kyle, scheduling, hauling and delivering anything anywhere on the West Coast.

What is your hometown? Hauser

Where do you live now? Hauser

What job do you do? I’m a partner in a new company with my son, Kyle, named “Heavy Tug.”

How long have you been doing this job? We just started the company in August of this year. Basically we haul anything that can fit on a trailer anywhere from as far south as California and as far east as the Dakotas.

What do you like the least about this job? I love this job.

What do you like the most about this job? I like every aspect of this job – so far, but then it’s so new everything is exciting right now.

Tell us a funny/unusual or sad story that happened on the job. The hauling job is too new to have a story yet, but when I worked as an industrial engineering technician with the Department of Defense, I worked in a maintenance depot facility. Inside this facility were a large variety of shops, such as a welding, sheet metal, engine and transmission rebuilding, a paint shop and a small arms (weapons) maintenance shop to name a few.

Since we needed to be competitive with other facilities and other contracting shops I was brought in to measure performance standards.

The people working there were aware of why I was there, and they had various reactions to me. Some people would walk away or start working really hard. It was interesting to see. Well, one day I was standing outside a restroom waiting for my partner, and people started filing out. They kept filing out and I started wondering what was going on until one guy stopped and asked me. “So, are you studying the use of our restroom facility now?”

What is your dream job? This is my dream job. To work with one of my sons really is a dream come true. However, I look forward to operating this business from an office rather than from the seat of a truck.

If your life were made into a movie, whom would you want to play you? Some of the kids at my church started calling me Jumanji, So I’ll go with Robin Williams.
