Smyth’s OT goal propels visiting Avalanche

Ryan Smyth scored 23 seconds into overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche a 3-2 victory over the host Calgary Flames on Friday night.

Marek Svatos tied it at 2 with 4:15 left in regulation, and Jose Theodore made 39 saves for the victory. Joe Sakic set up the winner and also scored for Colorado to reach the 1,600-point mark.

Alex Tanguay and Matthew Lombardi scored for Calgary, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 19 saves.

•Avalanche defenseman Jordan Leopold will have wrist surgery and be sidelined about two months.

Sabres 4, Panthers 2: At Sunrise, Fla., Drew Stafford’s fluke goal with 8:48 left in the third period snapped a tie and helped Buffalo break a three-game losing streak with a victory over Florida.

Stafford scored when his wrist shot bounced off goalie Tomas Vokoun’s blocker high into the air, then fell in behind Vokoun. Buffalo’s Daniel Paille looked as though he might have tipped the puck, but the goal was awarded after video review.

Red Wings 5, Sharks 1: At Detroit, Valtteri Filppula and Tomas Holmstrom each had a goal and an assist in the Red Wings’ victory over San Jose.

Detroit has won four straight.

•Detroit forward Kris Draper signed a three-year contract extension.

Canucks 3, Capitals 2: Goalie Roberto Luongo extended his winning streak against the Capitals to 10 games by making 27 saves, and Taylor Pyatt scored twice, leading Vancouver past host Washington.

Canadiens 7, Hurricanes 4: At Raleigh, N.C., Tomas Plekanec had two goals and two assists to help Montreal beat Carolina.

Brown signs L.A. extension

Right wing Dustin Brown agreed to a six-year extension with the Los Angeles Kings, putting him under contract through the 2013-14 season.
