Find frightfully fun Halloween blogs in a snap

Frank Sennett Correspondent

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky – these blogs for Halloween.

Their house is a museum. Realtors from around the nation recall their creepiest open houses on the Haunted Real Estate Blog. “I had a vacant listing where the owner had passed away and I could feel her presence in a particular area of the house,” writes a Miami-based agent. “One day, while showing it to some customers, one of them turns around to the area where I ‘feel’ her and says, ‘bye grandma!’ ” Another woman claims she can spark home sales by “clearing” out lingering spirits. In this housing market, it might be worth a try.

Where people come to see ‘em. A knife-wielding Timothy J. Haskell, who recently directed Corey Feldman in an off-Broadway play (now that’s scary!), takes visitors backstage at his commercial haunted house with New York’s Most Horrifying Haunted Blog. Tip for patrons: Leave the flip-flops and high heels at home, lest you trip while fleeing a ghoul. “I think you are super cute in tennis shoes,” Haskell writes. “They look great on you. All your friends are going to like you and that dude is still going to think it’s hot that you are jumping all over him even if you are wearing an old pair of Sauconys.”

They really are a scream. The Morbid Anatomy Blog purports to be all about “surveying the interstices of art and medicine, death and culture.” Translation: This site is stocked with enough pictures of dissected dead people and other shivery delights to remind us of those “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” books we used to read as kids.

Neat. If you ain’t ‘fraid of no ghosts, this is the perfect time of year to explore paranormal research. Start with the Ghost Sickness Paranormal Research Blog, which explains unexplainable events in both the United States and Great Britain. For a lengthy list of paranormal-obsessed sites, visit Ghost Stories.

Sweet. Candy Yum Yum has been counting down to Halloween with entries on everything from snack-cake spiders to kids’ least-favorite treats (fruit, salty snacks, toys and baked goods). But maybe you’ll find some healthful handouts in the Green Halloween section of Candy Blog, which chronicles one mom’s quest for palatable organic confections. Whatever you do, don’t stock up on Super Osama bin Laden Kulfa Balls, a frightful Pakistani product recently featured at Candy Critic.

Petite. Adults now hog the Halloween fun, but it’s still a special day for children. For tips on kid-friendly tricks and treats, visit Halloween for All. Entries feature not-too-spooky movie recommendations and ideas for spine-tingling slumber parties.

So get a witch’s shawl on. Or peruse CostumZee‘s idea blog for slightly more spellbinding get-ups. Perhaps you’d like to be sighted as Sasquatch on the party circuit, for instance, or … Bret Michaels of hair-metal band Poison (and VH1’s “Rock of Love”)? Speaking of lame ideas, check the Ugly Halloween Costumes blog for what not to wear. There’s a special place in Halloween Hell reserved for the parents who dressed their toddler as Hitler.

A broomstick you can crawl on. Learn more about paganism at Broomstick Chronicles, hosted by a Northern California woman in the accounting industry whose profile photo shows her in full witch regalia. Fun fact: Pagans oppose military intervention in Iran. The 2 Witches Blog similarly features friends who “share their daily lives but also information related to modern neo-paganism.” Meanwhile, The Witches’ Voice has been delivering neo-pagan news for a decade. After gaining a better understanding of real spell-casters, check out how costume makers depict them these days at Sexy Witch – strictly for research purposes, of course.

It’s time to pay a call on … these blogs for Halloween.
