Get the kids prepared to go back to school safely

If kids aren’t back in school already, they will be this week. (Pause for applause from parents.)

The final day of freedom before school starts is a good time to go over safety rules for elementary-age students who will be walking or biking to school. Rule number one is stick together.

It’s always a good idea for kids to walk in a group. And of course the basic street-crossing rules apply – look both ways, use the crosswalk, et cetera.

It should be noted that kids riding bikes in Spokane are required to wear a helmet, but it’s important even in places where it’s not required. It’s always a good idea to practice the route ahead of time and make sure you identify businesses or homes along the way where your children can go for help if they need it.

The same rules apply for older students who transport themselves to school, whether by foot or by car. Of course, rule number one for teen drivers on their way to high school is simple – don’t wreck the car.

Pageant time

Young girls in Idaho are invited to apply for the Little Miss Idaho International Pageant to be held Sept. 29 in Nampa.

There are four divisions spanning ages 2-12, with a queen selected for each division.

In addition, a Grand Supreme Queen will be selected and be given the title Little Miss Idaho International.

Girls will be judged on interviews, poise, beauty and modeling.

The entry fee is $65 and the deadline is Sept. 15. Call (208) 283-8718 to receive an application.
