One-party rule may be ending

Nearly two decades of one-party rule in this Caribbean nation seemed to be coming to a history-making end Monday after voters put opposition leader Bruce Golding and his Jamaica Labor Party in power.

The 31-29 preliminary results would give the Jamaica Labor Party a slim majority in the 60-seat parliament.

But Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller refused to concede defeat.

“We are conceding no victory to the Jamaica Labor Party until the final count … in various constituencies,” said Simpson-Miller, president of the People’s National Party.

State to pay killer after rape claim

The state has agreed to pay $35,000 to settle a lawsuit with a convicted murderer who alleged that state prison staff raped and assaulted her.

In a 1996 lawsuit, Lisa Michelle Lambert, 34, accused administrators at the State Correctional Institution at Cambridge Springs of doing nothing to prevent the assaults. She also alleged that she was videotaped during a strip search.

Lambert alleged that the assaults happened while she was serving her life sentence for the 1991 murder of 16-year-old Laurie Show, a Lancaster high school sophomore.

Lambert stalked and murdered Show because she thought the teen was involved with Lambert’s boyfriend. The case helped lead to antistalking laws in Pennsylvania and spawned a 2000 TV movie, “The Stalking of Laurie Show.”

RAVENNA, Ohio

Blast destroys storage warehouse

An explosion leveled a storage warehouse at a northeast Ohio industrial plant closed on Labor Day and shook the ground more than a mile away, officials said. No injuries were reported.

“We heard a huge boom like a percussion, then complete silence,” said City Councilman Joe Bica, who lives more than a mile away. “Then you could hear every fire and police siren in town.”

Fire officials did not know what caused the explosion at the Griswold Manufacturing Inc. processing plant shortly before 7 a.m., fire department spokesman Bob Walker said.

The processing plant, which punches holes in metal products, has 117 employees – who were all off Monday because of the holiday, Walker said. The warehouse’s steel structure was all that’s left standing, he said.

BODEGA BAY, Calif.

Boys’ sand cave collapses, kills one

A cave that two brothers were digging into the side of a sand dune collapsed, killing the younger boy, authorities said.

The 10-year-old boy and his brother were tunneling under a 40-foot cypress tree at crowded Salmon Creek State Beach on Sunday, fire officials said.

“The tree did fall over, but it is purely speculation if the wind or age or tunneling brought the tree down,” Bodega Bay Fire Chief Sean Grinnell said.
