For the week of Aug. 26 through Sept. 1, there were 172 records broken. Temperatures climbed to 99 degrees in Athens, Ga., on Aug. 26. Naples, Fla., reported a record of 97 degrees on the 28th.

Last week’s heat wave was mostly in the West. On Aug. 29, Beaumont, Calif., soared to a record 111 degrees while Thermal, Calif., reported 117 degrees. Riverside, Calif., reported a record 111 degrees on Aug. 30. Record heat also plagued the Central Valley of California. On Aug. 29, Sacramento reported a high of 105 degrees.

Many heat extremes also were reported in Oregon, Washington and Utah.

Record rains were seen in Daytona, Fla., with 2.21 inches measured on Aug. 31. Even heat-baked Southern California tallied nine rainfall records early last week.
